Dr. Bents was born and raised in Oregon. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado in 1986. He received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1990. Following surgical internship, he served as an Air Force F-16 Flight Surgeon in Misawa, Japan. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency in 1997 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. He served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Kirtland Air Force followed by becoming Chief of the Orthopedic Department at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado. While at USAFA, he was the Varsity Team Physician for Air Force Hockey, Boxing, and Baseball teams.
Dr. Bents returned to Oregon in 2004 and established himself as one of the premier surgeons in Southern Oregon. He is actively involved in research and has numerous publications in prestigious journals. Using the most modern and minimally invasive techniques, he specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures, with a focus on shoulder and knee surgery. He also performs endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery and hip arthroscopy. At the Grants Pass Ambulatory Surgery Center, he is the Chairman of the Management Committee. Dr. Bents is an active member of the community and serves as the team physician for many of the local high schools.
He and his wife, D.D., have 3 children and reside in Grants Pass, OR. He is an avid fisherman and enjoys coaching numerous youth sports teams, playing baseball, snowboarding, woodworking, and camping with his family.
Dr. Bents is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1999. He holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine and is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America
